The light, porous material collects small and large bits of gunk, waste organics and detritus, keeping your filter clean, and in-turn keeping your aquarium clean too. This also provides extra surface area for Nitrifying bacteria to live in; helping to contribute to the natural bacteria cycle in your aquarium.
